Why are my candles burning soot and smoke?
Sooting is caused when there is a flame and combustion disturbance. Any candle will soot if the flame is disturbed, for instance, the wick is too long, air current disturbing the tear drop shape of the flame. Also, many believe that when a candle soots it is because of the type of wax, fragrance oils or other additives used in its production. This is not to be true.
Why is my candle not producing a full melt pool?
As the candle burns down, there is a coating of wax on the walls of the container. This is called 'hang up' in candle-making terminology. This happens when the flame is not big enough to melt all the wax to give a full melt pool. A full melt pool, although amazing to achieve, will heat the container thereby making it extremely hot to touch.
'Hang-up' occurs in most plant-based waxes (like the ones we use) and could be corrected by adding paraffin wax. However, at Kaanch we strive to offer the best quality soy candles and therefore avoid blending our soy wax with paraffin.
How long should I burn my candle?
The maximum burn time varies from candle to candle depending on their volume. By rule of thumb, the first burn should be at least for two hours and not more than four hours. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when half an inch of wax is left. Always read the candle safety label on the candle vessel.
